For Lee County Commissioner 2018

Bill Taylor

I grew up here, in paradise. I love it here. And I’m frustrated that the people in power aren’t doing everything they can to preserve and maintain the place where we live, work, and play.

Bill Taylor has been a resident of Lee County since the early 1970’s when his father retired from the Air Force and moved the family to Fort Myers. Bill attended Edgewood Elementary, Dunbar Middle and graduated Fort Myers High and Edison Community College, now FSW. For 30 years Bill has produced over 150 theatrical productions across Lee County, mostly with Theatre Conspiracy at the Alliance for the Arts (TCAA). He founded the company with a strong vision to produce works that were artistically fulfilling and new to local audiences. In that time he has been an arts leader consistently breaking down barriers both artistically and socially. The company earned grants from the prestigious Shubert Foundation and earned the International Centre for Women Playwrights award for support of female playwrights.

His establishment of the company’s New Play Contest has garnered Lee County national recognition as place for the arts. Under Bill’s leadership the company began an initiative to produce work that is geared towards minority artists and audiences. Each year more minority performers and audiences have found opportunity in Lee County. Last year 48% of performers in TCAA shows were minority.

Bill served for a number of years on the Public Art Committee for the City of Fort Myers. In that time he helped oversee the installation of numerous public art works including the iconic Fire Dance sculpture in Centennial Park. All works were funded by using a voluntary fee developers paid to the city, not from taxpayers.

In 1983 Bill met the woman of his dreams, Lauren Drexler, while in the theatre program at Edison Community College. After graduation they both went their separate ways. They were happily reunited when their former college professor invited them to perform in a new professional theatre company in Fort Myers. They have been married for 22 years and have 3 great kids. August, Olivia and Everett. They enjoy time together on the water in their kayaks attempting to navigate the entire Great Calusa Blue Way. They are also avid hockey fans and Bill is captain of his men’s league hockey team, The Big Dekes.

Why is Bill running?

Having lived here since the early 1970’s Bill has seen the area grow by leaps and bounds. That growth has reached a point where our most valuable resources, clean drinking water and clean water for recreation are threatened. Housing prices are skyrocketing beyond what are work force can afford. The current path the County is on will make our area just more of the same in the blur of helter-skelter growth our great state is experiencing. Bill’s top priorities are preservation of natural resources, protection of unique communities (Alva, Pine Island, Estero, North Fort Myers) and job growth in Lehigh Acres and Cape Coral which will ease the burden on our roads. Please, look through each of the issues on this site. Feel free to provide input. If you agree with my stances, please donate and support this campaign. We live in paradise, let’s take care of it!
